How Cassia County Prosecutors Used TimePilot to Secure a Plea Deal in a Quadruple Homicide Case

How Cassia County Prosecutors Used TimePilot to Secure a Plea Deal in a Quadruple Homicide Case

The Case

In July 2025, four victims were found dead in what investigators alleged was a series of killings carried out over the course of a single day by 56-year-old Burley, Idaho resident Benjamin Roy Naylor. The case drew statewide attention due to the scale of the investigation, the number of crime scenes involved, and the extensive coordination required between multiple law enforcement agencies.

The Challenge

The investigation quickly became one of the most complex murder cases the region had seen in recent memory. The case involved seven responding agencies, including Idaho State Police and sheriff’s offices across Cassia, Minidoka, Jerome, Lincoln, and Twin Falls counties.

Beyond the sheer volume of data, prosecutors faced an incredibly tight statutory deadline under Idaho law to declare whether or not they would seek the death penalty. Compounding this pressure was the defendant's severe mental illness. The suspect was a diagnosed schizophrenic.

The prosecution needed to piece together and analyze a massive evidentiary record, including:

  • Doorbell camera footage showing the suspect approaching and leaving a victim’s home armed with a handgun.

  • Body-worn camera footage from responding officers.

  • Traffic stop and arrest footage.

  • Dozens of investigative reports and witness interviews containing bizarre statements from the suspect.

  • Vehicle evidence tied across multiple scenes.

  • Forensic and photographic evidence connected to the shootings.

The core challenge was not just organizing this data across agencies, but evaluating the suspect's state of mind during the interviews to determine if his actions were driven by a severe schizophrenic episode, which would heavily impact the decision to pursue capital punishment.

The Solution

Using TimePilot, the prosecution team in Cassia County centralized the evidence into a single workspace where video, reports, audio, and all supporting documentation could be reviewed together.

One of the most important advantages of using TimePilot came during the timeline creation. They were able to connect movements across counties, link vehicle evidence to multiple scenes, and organize footage documenting the suspect before and after the killings. Because TimePilot allowed the team to cross-reference statements, reports, and interviews in seconds, it drastically accelerated their ability to prepare the case strategy ahead of strict legal deadlines.

Supporting the Prosecution

As competency proceedings moved forward, mental illness remained a major factor in sentencing considerations and plea negotiations. The prosecution team used TimePilot to structurally cross-examine the suspect’s interview statements.

By mapping the things the defendant was saying against a hard timeline of physical evidence, Cassia County Prosecuting Attorney McCord Larsen was able to effectively walk a mental health expert through the suspect's exact timeline and behaviors. This meticulous analysis provided the concrete insight needed to quickly determine that the suspect was actively experiencing a schizophrenic episode during the crime.

Furthermore, TimePilot also became a powerful tool for victim advocacy. Larsen was able to sit down with the victims' families, walking them through the evidentiary timeline to answer highly specific questions—such as the exact position of a victim's body—providing them with crucial answers and emotional catharsis about whether their loved one suffered.

"Between TimePilot and the mental health expert, it was easy for me to make the determination that the death penalty was inappropriate because he was acting inside of a schizophrenic episode... I was able to walk into the preliminary hearing having all this data with me, make an offer, and resolve the case for four life sentences at the preliminary hearing, instead of drawing it out and having a long, protracted experience."

The Outcome

In 2026, the defendant accepted a plea agreement to avoid the death penalty and was sentenced to four consecutive fixed-life terms.

By having all the data beautifully mapped out and cross-referenced early on, the prosecution was able to secure this resolution right at the preliminary hearing. This swift legal resolution saved the county from a heavily protracted trial and, most importantly, achieved absolute certainty for the victims' families while sparing them from years of painful appeals and retraumatization.

Case Brief

After a deadly shooting spree across two Southern Idaho counties left four victims dead, prosecutors were tasked with organizing a massive, multi-jurisdictional influx of evidence. The case involved multiple crime scenes, surveillance footage, body camera video, law enforcement reports, and complex forensic evidence spanning six different counties.
